Apple Reports Third Quarter Results

Cupertino, CA -- Apple® announced financial results for its fiscal 2010 third quarter ended June 26, 2010. The Company posted record revenue of $15.7 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.25 billion, or $3.51 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $9.73 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.83 billion, or $2.01 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 39.1 percent compared to 40.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 52 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Apple sold 3.47 million Macs during the quarter, representing a new quarterly record and a 33 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 8.4 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 61 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.41 million iPods during the quarter, representing an eight percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company began selling iPads during the quarter, with total sales of 3.27 million.

“It was a phenomenal quarter that exceeded our expectations all around, including the most successful product launch in Apple’s history with iPhone 4,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad is off to a terrific start, more people are buying Macs than ever before, and we have amazing new products still to come this year.”

“We’re really pleased to have generated over $4 billion of cash during the quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the fourth fiscal quarter of 2010, we expect revenue of about $18 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $3.44”

AT&T Reports Record Quarter for iPhone Activations

Dallas -- AT&T Inc. reported solid second-quarter results highlighted by double-digit earnings growth, an increase in consolidated revenues and improved margins. These results were driven by continued growth in mobile broadband, including a record quarter for iPhone activations, gains in IP-based and strategic business services and disciplined execution on cost initiatives.

"We delivered another strong quarter, with improved revenue trends, double-digit earnings growth and solid cash flow. These results add to our confidence going into the second half of the year,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and chief executive officer.

“We continue to see positive signs of growth in almost every customer segment of our business, especially wireless, which speaks to the quality of our execution and our leadership in the industry’s most powerful growth driver — mobile broadband. I am excited by the opportunities ahead.”

Second-Quarter Financial Results

(During the second quarter, AT&T announced it had entered into a definitive agreement with IBM to sell Sterling Commerce for approximately $1.4 billion in cash. AT&T expects the sale to close in the second half of 2010. Second-quarter comparisons are based on results from continuing operations, which exclude results from Sterling Commerce in all periods.)

For the quarter ended June 30, 2010, AT&T's consolidated revenues totaled $30.8 billion, up $194 million, or 0.6 percent, versus the year-earlier quarter, marking the company's second consecutive quarter with a year-over-year revenue increase. Versus the first quarter of this year, consolidated revenues were up $278 million, or 0.9 percent.

Compared with results for the second quarter of 2009, operating expenses were $24.7 billion versus $25.1 billion; operating income was $6.1 billion, up from $5.5 billion; and AT&T's operating income margin expanded to 19.8 percent, up from 18.0 percent. Total employee force is down by more than 10,000 since year-end 2009.

Second-quarter 2010 net income attributable to AT&T totaled $4.0 billion, or $0.68 per diluted share, up 25.9 percent, including a $0.07 one-time gain from the exchange of Telmex Internacional stock for shares of América Móvil. Excluding the gain from the Telmex Internacional transaction, earnings grew 13.0 percent to $0.61 per diluted share. These results compare with net income attributable to AT&T of $3.2 billion, or $0.54 per diluted share, in the year-earlier second quarter.

Second-quarter 2010 cash from operating activities totaled $8.6 billion; capital expenditures totaled $4.9 billion, including a nearly 60-percent increase in wireless-related capital investment versus the year-earlier quarter, as AT&T aggressively deploys next-generation wireless broadband networks. Free cash flow — cash from operating activities minus capital expenditures — totaled $3.7 billion.

Compared with results for the first half of 2009, year to date through the second quarter, cash from operating activities totaled $15.8 billion versus $15.8 billion; capital expenditures totaled $8.2 billion versus $7.4 billion; and free cash flow totaled $7.6 billion versus $8.4 billion.

Updating Outlook

Due to improved revenue trends and strong execution, AT&T has updated its earnings outlook for full-year 2010. Previously the company expected stable-to-improved earnings per share, stable-to-improved consolidated operating income margins and free cash flow in line with 2008 results. The company now expects strong earnings per share growth for full-year 2010, improved consolidated operating income margins and free cash flow above 2008 levels.

Wireless Operational Highlights

AT&T delivered strong second-quarter growth in its wireless business, led by its premier data network, industry leadership in mobile broadband and a compelling array of devices and applications. Highlights included:

Strong Second-Quarter Subscriber Gain. AT&T posted an organic net gain in total wireless subscribers of 1.6 million, to reach 90.1 million in service. Second-quarter net add growth reflects rapid adoption of smartphones, increases in prepaid subscribers and growth in a host of connected devices such as eReaders, global positioning systems and alarm monitoring systems. Connected devices net adds were 896,000 in the quarter to reach 6.7 million, and retail postpaid net adds totaled 496,000 to reach 67.0 million.

Best-ever Subscriber Churn Levels. For the sixth consecutive quarter, AT&T had year-over-year improvement in both total and postpaid wireless churn. Postpaid churn was 1.01 percent, down from 1.07 percent in the year-earlier quarter, and total churn was 1.29 percent versus 1.48 percent in the second quarter of 2009 — both record lows for the company.

Robust Wireless Data Revenue Growth. Wireless data revenues — from messaging, Internet access, access to applications and related services — increased $936 million, or 27.2 percent, from the year-earlier quarter to $4.4 billion. AT&T wireless subscribers on data plans increased more than 24 percent over the past year. Versus the year-earlier quarter, total text messages carried on the AT&T network increased 41.7 percent to 154 billion and multimedia messages more than doubled to 2.6 billion.

Continued Postpaid ARPU Growth. Driven by strong data growth, postpaid subscriber ARPU increased 3.4 percent versus the year-earlier quarter to $62.63, despite including 1.6 million subscribers from the acquisition of properties from Verizon Wireless. This marked the sixth consecutive quarter AT&T has posted a year-over-year increase in postpaid ARPU. Postpaid data ARPU reached $21.07, up 18.6 percent versus the year-earlier quarter, and total postpaid subscriber revenues continued recent trends, with solid double-digit growth, reflecting increases in both voice and data.

Strong Integrated Device Growth. Key drivers of wireless data growth are increased penetration of integrated devices (handsets with QWERTY or virtual keyboards in addition to voice functionality) and greater usage of AT&T’s mobile broadband network, the nation’s fastest. The number of 3G postpaid integrated devices on AT&T's wireless network increased by 2.9 million to 29.7 million, an increase of 98.2 percent year over year and 10.8 percent sequentially. At the end of the quarter, 53.2 percent of AT&T's 67.0 million postpaid subscribers had integrated devices, up from 36.3 percent one year earlier. The average ARPU for integrated devices on AT&T's network is 1.7 times that of the company's nonintegrated-device base. More than 80 percent of integrated device subscribers are on FamilyTalk and/or business discount plans. Churn levels for these plans continue to run below the company's total and postpaid base.

3.2 Million iPhone Activations. On June 24, AT&T began offering iPhone 4, the most powerful iPhone yet. Preorder sales of iPhone 4 were 10 times higher than the first day of preorderin.

Global Smartphone Shipments Jump 43 Percent to 60 Million Units in Q2 2010

Boston -- According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew a relatively healthy 43 percent year-over-year to reach 60 million units in Q2 2010. Healthy operator subsidies, vigorous competition between premium-tier vendors and a growing range of lower-cost models continued to drive the upswing.

Alex Spektor, Analyst at Strategy Analytics said, “Global smartphone shipments reached a record 60 million units during Q2 2010, accounting for 19 percent of handset volumes, and growing a healthy 43 percent from 42 million in Q2 2009. Sales are being driven at an above-average rate by strong operator subsidies, vigorous competition between high-end vendors and a growing tide of lower-cost models using operating software like Symbian and Android.”

Neil Mawston, Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “The global smartphone industry is growing volume but the industry’s value is beginning to feel the effects of intensifying competition. Dozens of vendors from the telecoms, PC and consumer electronics industries are piling into the market and driving down prices. Even established brands such as Nokia, RIM and Apple are finding it increasingly hard to raise prices and profits in the face of such fierce competition.”

Other findings from Strategy Analytics’ Q2 2010 Global Smartphone Market Share Update report include:

* RIM shipped 11.2 million smartphones worldwide in Q2 2010, comfortably beating Apple’s 8.4 million units during the quarter. RIM is the number one smartphone player in North and South America, but its global marketshare of 19 percent is still a long way behind Nokia’s leading 40 percent share;

* Apple shipped 8.4 million iPhones worldwide in Q2 2010. Apple had a mixed quarter. Apple’s iPhone shipments, revenues and profitability continued to outperform, but public criticism of the company is mounting. Apple was criticized for its intensive production methods in China, while the iPhone has been heavily criticized for its poorly designed touchable antenna. The honeymoon period for Apple in the mobile world is clearly coming to an end. We believe Apple may have lost some heartshare in recent weeks because of its perceived mishandling of the antenna problem, and Apple will have to work hard during the second half of the year to stop lost heartshare converting into lost marketshare.

Verizon Reports Strong Wireless, FiOS Customer Growth

* 1.4 million total net customer additions, excluding divestitures and adjustments, in 2Q 2010; 665,000 retail postpaid net customer additions in the quarter; continued low retail postpaid churn of 0.94 percent.

* 86.2 million retail customers; 92.1 million total customers, after divestitures and conforming adjustments related to the Alltel acquisition.

* 3.4 percent increase in total revenues from 2Q 2009; 5.2 percent increase in service revenues; data revenues up 23.8 percent; 30.3 percent operating income margin and 47.5 percent Segment EBITDA margin on service revenues (non-GAAP).

Wireline

* 196,000 net FiOS Internet and 174,000 net FiOS TV customer additions; 3.8 million total FiOS Internet customers and 3.2 million total FiOS TV customers.

* 11.4 percent increase in consumer ARPU from 2Q 2009; total broadband and video revenues of $1.8 billion, up 20.1 percent from 2Q 2009. * 6.2 percent increase in strategic business services revenues; total global enterprise revenues up 0.6 percent from 2Q 2009.

For second-quarter 2010, Verizon Communications Inc. reported continued strong cash flow growth, coupled with improved margins for both its Wireless and Wireline business segments, and improved revenue trends for sales to global business customers.

The company reported a loss of 7 cents in basic earnings per share (EPS) in the quarter, which included $2.3 billion in pre-tax costs for workforce reductions associated with a second-quarter incentive offer that will lead to approximately 11,000 voluntary separations this year. This compares with earnings of 52 cents per share in the second quarter of 2009.

'Solid Improvement in Operational Results'

"Verizon showed solid improvement in operational results in the quarter," said Chairman and CEO Ivan Seidenberg. "In addition, the wireline spinoff to Frontier on July 1 improves our future growth profile. We see the opportunity to create additional shareholder value with a revenue portfolio that is now more heavily focused on wireless, FiOS and global IP."

Seidenberg added, "We have the network platforms in place, and the product and service innovations in the pipeline, to fuel the next generation of growth in our changing industry. Our cost-reduction efforts are gaining momentum, and trends in the global business market are showing signs of stabilization."

Consolidated Results Include Divestitures

Verizon's consolidated second-quarter 2010 results include wireline local exchange businesses covering 4 million access lines that were spun off and merged with Frontier Communications on July 1. Results also include certain wireless properties until they were divested in April and June to comply with conditions imposed in connection with regulatory approvals of last year's acquisition of Alltel. These wireless properties, covering more than 2 million customers, were held in a trust through the date of divestiture.

Items that negatively impacted Verizon's second-quarter 2010 net income were 52 cents per share associated with the voluntary incentive program for union-represented employees, about two-thirds of whom left the payroll in late June or early July; 6 cents per share for both Alltel merger integration costs and taxes associated with the divestiture of the Alltel trust properties; 4 cents per share in Frontier spinoff-related charges; and 3 cents per share for a one-time, non-cash revenue adjustment of $268 million, which was recorded to properly defer previously recognized wireless data revenues that will be earned and recognized in future periods.

Verizon's total operating revenues were $26.8 billion in second-quarter 2010, a decrease of 0.3 percent compared with second-quarter 2009.

Cash flow from operations totaled $16.9 billion in the first half of 2010, compared with $14.1 billion in the first half of 2009. Cash flow from operations totaled $9.8 billion in second-quarter 2010 alone, up 29.8 percent compared with second-quarter 2009.

Capital expenditures totaled $4.2 billion in the second quarter of 2010, down 3.6 percent from second-quarter 2009. Full-year 2010 guidance for capital expenditures remains in the range of $16.8 billion to $17.2 billion. In second-quarter 2010, free cash flow (non-GAAP; cash flow from operations less capital expenditures) totaled $5.5 billion, a 76.7 percent year-over-year increase.

Verizon's net debt (non-GAAP; total debt less end-of-period cash and cash equivalents) was $52.7 billion at the end of second-quarter 2010. The net debt to Adjusted EBITDA ratio (non-GAAP; net debt divided by earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization adjusted for non-recurring or one-time items) was approximately 1.5 at the end of the quarter, and Verizon expects it to be lower by year-end 2010.

Wireless Momentum Continues:

Top-Line Revenue Growth, Strong Profitability, Low Retail Postpaid Churn

Verizon Wireless continued to deliver strong margins and data revenue growth, and solid customer additions. In the second quarter of 2010:

* Verizon Wireless added 665,000 retail postpaid and 454,000 total retail customers in the quarter, excluding divestitures and adjustments, both increases over the first quarter of 2010.

* At the end of the second quarter, the company had 86.2 million retail customers, which represented nearly 94 percent of the company's wireless customers, the largest number of retail customers of any U.S. wireless provider.

* The company also added 896,000 reseller customers in the second quarter.

* The total number of customers at the end of the quarter was 92.1 million, after adding 1.4 million total net customers in the quarter and removing a net 2.1 million customers in connection with divestitures and conforming adjustments related to the Alltel acquisition.

* In addition, the company had 7.7 million "other connections" at the end of the quarter -- such as machine-to-machine, eReaders and telematics -- adding 264,000 net other connections in the quarter. This brings the number of total wireless connections to 99.7 million at the end of the second quarter.

* Retail postpaid churn, retail churn and total customer churn remained low, at 0.94 percent, 1.33 percent and 1.27 percent, respectively. All are the company's best levels in nearly two years.

* Retail service revenues in the quarter totaled $13.5 billion, up 4.2 percent year over year. Retail data revenue was up 23.4 percent to $4.7 billion. Service revenues in the second quarter were $14.0 billion, up 5.2 percent. Total revenues were $16.0 billion, up 3.4 percent year over year.

* Retail service ARPU (average monthly service revenue per user) grew 0.9 percent over the second quarter of 2009 to $51.56. Retail data ARPU increased to $17.85, up 19.4 percent year over year.

* Wireless operating income margin was 30.3 percent, an increase of 150 basis points, or 1.5 percentage points, year over year. Segment EBITDA margin on service revenues (non-GAAP) was 47.5 percent, up 120 basis points over second-quarter 2009.

Wireline Growth in Consumer and Enterprise Markets:

Revenues Increase for FiOS and Strategic Business Services

Verizon continued to add customers for broadband and video services provided over its FiOS fiber-optic network, and revenues increased for advanced communications and related business services provided over Verizon's global IP (Internet protocol) network. In the second quarter of 2010:

* Verizon added 196,000 net new FiOS Internet customers and 174,000 net new FiOS TV customers. Verizon has posted consecutive quarterly gains in the number of customers using FiOS services since FiOS Internet was introduced in 2004, and by the end of the second quarter had 3.8 million FiOS Internet and 3.2 million FiOS TV customers.

* FiOS Internet penetration (customers as a percentage of potential customers) was 29.7 percent by the end of the quarter, with the product available for sale to 12.9 million premises. This compares with 28.1 percent and 11.0 million, respectively, at the end of second-quarter 2009.

* FiOS TV penetration was 25.9 percent by the end of the quarter, with the product available for sale to 12.4 million premises. This compares with 24.6 percent and 10.3 million, respectively, at the end of second-quarter 2009.

* Total wireline broadband and video revenues were $1.8 billion in the quarter, up 20.1 percent from second-quarter 2009. This includes FiOS broadband revenues, which grew 33.2 percent year over year. All FiOS-based services, including narrowband voice, generated 43 percent of consumer wireline revenues in second-quarter 2010, compared with 33 percent in second-quarter 2009.

* Consumer ARPU for wireline services was $80.76 in the quarter, up 11.4 percent compared with second-quarter 2009. ARPU for FiOS customers was more than $145.

* Global enterprise revenue totaled $4.0 billion in the quarter, an increase of 0.6 percent compared with second-quarter 2009 and an improvement from the 1.4 percent year-over-year decline in the first quarter of 2010. Sales of strategic enterprise services -- such as security and IT solutions, as well as strategic networking -- generated $1.6 billion, up 6.2 percent compared with second-quarter 2009.

* Segment EBITDA margin (non-GAAP) was 22.7 percent, compared with 21.7 percent in the first quarter of 2010 and 24.5 percent in the second quarter of 2009.

Additional Highlights

Wireless

* Verizon Wireless continued to lead the industry in cost efficiency. Monthly cash expense per customer (non-GAAP) decreased in the second quarter 2010 to $26.48, from $27.42 in the comparable period in 2009.

* In the second quarter, data revenues increased to 34.5 percent of all service revenues, up from 29.3 percent in the second quarter 2009.

* Verizon Wireless continued to invest in its broadband network, the nation's largest and most reliable 3G (third generation) network. Verizon's 3G network provides more coverage than any other U.S. carrier's and is available where 289 million people reside.

* Verizon Wireless plans to launch the nation's first 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) network in 25 to 30 markets by the end of this year and cover virtually all of its current nationwide 3G footprint by the end of 2013. In addition, as part of its 4G LTE network deployment plans, Verizon Wireless announced efforts during the quarter to work with rural companies to collaboratively build and operate a 4G network in those areas, using Verizon Wireless' 700MHz spectrum.

* In June, Verizon Wireless unveiled the much-anticipated DROID X by Motorola, the newest Android smartphone, which became available in stores and online last week. The Droid X features a large, high-resolution screen, 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities, personal HD video capture and sharing, and is ready for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 when the software is released by Adobe. During the second quarter, the company also expanded its smartphone lineup with the LG Ally, an Android device; the LG Fathom, powered by Windows Mobile; and the BlackBerry Bold 9650 global smartphone. The company also introduced the Samsung Reality, which has a full suite of messaging options, and the Pantech Jest.

* During the second quarter, Verizon Wireless customers sent or received more than 180 billion text messages. Customers also sent nearly 4.2 billion picture/video messages and completed more than 25 million music and video downloads.

* Verizon Wireless ranked highest among wireless providers in small to mid-sized business customer satisfaction in the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 U.S. Business Wireless Satisfaction Study released in June.

Pricing and Eligibility

AT&T Inc. has announced that AT&T is making it easy for customers to prepare for their iPhone 3G purchase by posting "Get iReady" tips and frequently asked questions at www.att.com/iphone. The site also includes a link for customers to check their upgrade eligibility and other wireless account information.

iPhone 3G will be available for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. These prices require two-year contracts and are available to the following customers:

Seoul -- Samsung reinforces its technology leadership by launching the world's first 10 megapixel mobile phone (model: SCH-B600) in Korean market.

Samsung reached another milestone in camera phones by launching 10 megapixel camera phone, which was unveiled at CeBIT in March this year. Samsung has been the first to introduce mobile phone with embedded camera in 2000. Samsung has also launched the world's first 5 megapixel camera phone in October 2004 ; the world's first 7 megapixel camera phone in July 2005.

Samsung's 10 megapixel camera phone (SCH-B600) is 6mm thinner and 10g lighter than the 7 megapixel camera phone (SCH-V770) and sets itself apart from its previous megapixel camera phones by combining mobile TV capability in Satellite standard.

The B600 offers the same level of picture-taking sophistication that a 10 megapixel digital camera offers. The camera function includes 3x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom. It also has auto focus and a flash unit that performs optimally for 10 megapixel photographs.

Also, the B600 comes fitted with a LED autofocus feature which assists users to capture clear, crisp photos even in dark settings. Located next to the lens, the LED autofocus automatically determines the distance and utilizes the appropriate focus setting for optimal photo shooting.

The B600 also supports white balance, manual focus, continuous picture-taking, and interval picture-taking functions.

My new battery isn't charging. Is it defective?
One needs to discharge and recharge a new battery at least 2-4 times for it to reach it's maximum rated capacity, as most of these new batteries, are not charged. An overnight charge or 12 hours, is a good enough time for your battery. An indication could be the battery getting warm to the touch. When charging the battery for the first time, the device may indicate that charging is complete after just 10 or 15 minutes. This is normal with

rechargeable batteries. New batteries are hard for the device to charge; they have never been fully charged and not "broken in." Sometimes the device's charger will stop charging a new battery before it is fully charged. If this happens, remove the battery from the device and then reinsert it. The charge cycle should begin again.

What is "memory effect"?
A partially discharged battery at times does not fully discharges before recharging. It sort of "forgets" to do so. This is what is the memory effect. For e.g. if you fully charge your battery and then use only 50% of its capacity before the next recharge, eventually the battery will become unaware of its extra 50% capacity, which has remained unused. The battery will remain functional, but only at 50% of its original capacity. To deal with this, always fully discharge your battery, before recharging it. This can be done by, unplugging the device's AC adapter and letting the device run on the battery until it ceases to function. This will help your battery remain healthy.
What Are Volts and Milliamp-hours (mAH)?

THE CELLULAR TECHNOLOGY

There is a type of low power two-way radio base station, which serves a coverage area, divided into many smaller zones (cells). Telephone handsets continuously search for the closest base station, and hop from base station to base station if the user was on the move. This strategy of replacing one high power base station with many low power base stations distributed throughout the coverage area made it possible to handle far more subscribers, and reduced the power requirements for wireless telephones.
Reducing the amount of power needed to carry a conversation through the airwaves, made it possible for manufacturers to produce much smaller phones. CELLULAR PHONES AND HEALTH HAZARDS
